Methuen is the youngest of ten children born to Lord Gaelen and Lady Caelia Taratyn. His father was a Warrior of Misztal, now retired from the ranks, and two of his four brothers and one sister also chose to undertake the arduous training required to serve Misztal as her Warriors.
The Warriors are an elite branch of the military, known for their precision with all manner of weaponry and unsurpassed battle planning and strategic skills. Methuen passed his Trials well ahead of the others of his year-group, and was one of the youngest to ever complete the training and earn the right to the title of Misztal Warrior. He has personally raised and trained his Warhorse Merlin since the day Merlin was old enough to leave his mother.
In his second year of training Methuen was assigned to the King as Envoy to the South, and spent a great deal of time learning about the Telmarines and their way of life, and he was the one who brought the news of the death of King Caspian IX to King Selan.
Since it was his duty to bring all manner of news to the King, Methuen was aware of the widespread assumption that Prince Caspian X would be betrothed to Kyril, the daughter of King Caspian’s closest advisor. He had never met either the Prince or Kyril, but he had done so much research on the two of them that he was shocked and saddened to hear of the fire that it was assumed took Kyril's life. It had been Methuen who helped King Selan draft the letters of sympathy that were sent to Narnia.
At about the same time Thu finished his Trials it was learned that the death of King Caspian had not been simply an unfortunate accident. Not long after that Misztal also learned that the Prince had been exiled, and Methuen was personally chosen by the King to search out Prince Caspian and offer Misztal’s aid if it was required.
